Cascina Spinerola is an excellent accommodation for anyone is looking for a relaxing holiday in a charme hotel in the Monferrato and in the Langhe.

Moncalvo, the smallest city in Italy, is of Roman origin and  was the property of the Church of Asti, then the Graffagni family, the  Marquis of Monferrato (who made it its Capital City), the Marquis of  Saluzzo (1306) and back to the Paleologi of Monferrato (1309). The City  suffered foreign occupations and was the last domain of the Gonzaga of  Mantua, who gave it in fief to Galeazzo of Canossa in 1604, to Rolando  Natta in 1619, to Filiberto, Marquis of Ceva in 1671. In 1691 it was  sacked by a part of the imperial troops headed by Eugenio of Savoy. It  then became property of the Savoy family in 1704. In August of 1774  Vittorio Amedeo III gave it City status, confirming the title already  granted by the Duke of Mantua Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga in March 1705. A  dynamic City, it is referred to as the Capital of white truffles in the  Monferrato.

Casale Monferrato features beautiful hills where many  winegrowing farms have similar architectural features, because of the  tufo cut into blocks to build dwellings. The same tufo can be found in  the cellars dug under the farms. And of course it would be improbable  for there not to be a temple to Bacchus, the Regional Wine Collection, a  building dating back to the 17^th  Century in the centre of Vignale Monferrato, which also boasts a beautiful church and a castle.

Asti, with its ancient history, at the centre of its province  which includes a section of the low Tanaro Valley, the western section  of the Basso Monferrato, and nearly all the Alto Monferrato and a strip  of the Langhe. This area is mainly hilly.

Alba is the Langhe capital, it is characterised by a medieval  structure and wonderful landscapes dotted with castles and towers hidden  amongst the green hills, from Barbaresco to Cortemilia, from Serralunga  to Mango, from Grinzane Cavour to Neive.

Bra with its history, its culture and traditions looking onto  the Roero, with its alternating copses and vineyards. Once summer is  over autumn is the most important season: the magical colours and unique  scents imbue the surrounding panorama with charm. This is a rich land,  it offers its grapes to the masters of drink, and it nourishes and  nurtures a treasure: truffles. A land between castles and keeps, whose  stones can tell very old stories. People here have been able to marry  development with nature, and the local economy depends on this in large  part. This is a land on human scale, offering a full range of art,  traditions and history, but also flavours and tastes of an excellent  gastronomy and the thousand aromas of its wines. And tradition has  become tourism.

From the 15^th century this fertile land was slowly worked and the site took on the new name of “Spinerola ”.

It has now been over one hundred years that where thorns (spine ) grew, we now have flourishing vines, and from the careful selection of grapes we obtain the wines of Cascina Spinerola; a careful selection of the best that Monferrato has to offer: Barbera, Freisa, Grignolino and Chardonnay.

My research is very wide but always leaves intact the wonderful scents that nature has gifted to Piedmontese ingredients.

Lightness and closeness to tradition are the objective of each and every dish I invent or, simply, interpret with humility and passion.

The Chef.

The prices are meant per night, per room, buffet breakfast, including VAT and taxes.

The first part is the Granary wing: two floors built over the old granary, of which the load bearing walls remain.

The other part is the Swallows’ Nest wing, result of the restoration of the area used to shelter wagons, carriages and for horses to rest: under this building’s roof each spring, swallows would return to build their nests.

The gardens are very well cared for and feature many varieties of flowers; your lazy Cascina afternoons might be spent by the elegant swimming pool.

This has resulted in an utterly charming complex that leaves your imagination and thoughts free to roam.

The restoration work has been carried out with an almost maniacal eye for detail, trying to preserve everything that could bear witness to times past and rural life.

Fabrics, woodwork, stones, bricks, arches: there’s nothing else needed to create a charming display of particulars that will give a perfect setting for your bio-balance and sense of relaxation.

At the beginning of the Eighteenth century, a very spacious and luxurious dwelling was built on this site.

Following a change of ownership, the stables were built in the inner courtyard alongside some colonnades to be used for farming purposes: thus it was christened Cascina Spinerola.

After an accurate and significant restoration work, carried out with particular attention to detail by the family who is the current owner, today the old Cascina is one of the most beautiful buildings used for hospitality in the Monferrato.

It is the same family who, with passion, warmth and balance, manages the hotel and the farm by the same name.

Piedmontese food is rich with flavours and history: the piedmontese land’s morphological variety and, as a result, that of its climate, have produced a differentiation in the gastronomy of the various geographical areas of Piedmont.

Not only have the territorial peculiarities produced a varied cuisine, but this was also the result of population, over the past few centuries, spread out over specific social classes: that is why we now have a more common cuisine, of the people, and one more elaborate and richer.

The “cucina povera” entirely mirrors the land and the fruits it provides, whilst the richer cuisine, found in the courts and noblemen’s mansions, has more of a French influence, as Piedmont was under Savoy rule for a long time.
